Mr. Lester Stumpe
Alumni Award
Lester A. Stumpe was born in Washington in March, 1949, attended Immanuel Luthern School, and graduated from Washington High School in 1967. He became involved in 4-H by planting seedlings near Lion's Lake, selling corn to make money to secure and paint trash barrels around town and picking up trash along highways leading into Washington. During his senior year at WHS, he won the top prize in the physics division of the Missouri Science Fair.
He earned a BS in Civil Engineering in 1971 and a MS in Enviromental Engineering from the Univeristy of Missouri, Columbia in 1973. In 1978 he was licensed as a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio. From 1972-1980 he worked for the BF Goodrich Chemical Company, managing wastewater treatment activities. From 1983 until his death in 2010, he worked for the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District as a planning engineer, planning manager and manager of watershed programs, policy and technical support.
For more than 30 years, Lester designed and directed a variety of studies to protect and enhance water resources in the greater Cleveland area. He directed or managed engineering and technical studies that have resulted in several hundred million dollars in constructed projects. Additionally, he developed and managed a number of research studies to futher understand water resource issues. During his career, he served on a variety of boards and committees to further environmental and infrastructure goals in the greater Cleveland area. He wrote and presented numerous papers at several state and national conferences.
Mr. Stumpe died at age 60 in March, 2010. He was married for 27 years to Marcia Mauter and had three children, Meagan, Melissa and Justin.
Jack & Jo Ann Hagedorn
Community Leader Award
Jack & Jo Ann (Dittemore) Hagedorn graduated from Washington High School together in 1952. Jo Ann was a Washington native, while Jack, born in Pittsburgh, moved to Washington in 1948.
Jo Ann earned her RN degree in 1955 from Washington University in St. Louis. She was the first woman elected to the Washington School Board and served from 1971-1980, including two years as President. During her years of service to the Washington School District, she served as library volunteer and kindergarten teacher's aide. She helped organize the highschool Athletic Association concession stand and continued to be an active member of that group for over twelve years. Currently she volunteers as a member of the Nurses Association Hospital Auxilary at Mercy and is an active member in PEO, the Garden Club and St. Peters United Church of Christ. The Optimist Club named her Optimist of the Year in 1972.
Jack was a member of the Washington Jaycees and was Key Man in 1961. His support of the Washington School District and the athletic program has spanned the last 40 years. He was a charter member of the high school Athletic Association and served as President for over ten years. He was a starter at track meets for 10 years and continued to help with track meets for another 20 years.
Jack was part of the WHS Football chain gang for 41 years. He was timer for boys & girls basketball games at the high school and middle school for 40 years. He actively served on the committee to pass the bond issue that funded the Washington Middle School. He is an active member of the VFW and since 1995 has volunteerd at the Wolf Sanctuary in Eureka.
Jack and Jo Ann have been married for 58 years and have three sons, Doug, Andy, and Nate.
Jim Scanlan
Educator Award
Jim Scanlan was born in St. Louis in January of 1936, graduated from McKinley High School in 1954, received a BS in Education Degree from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in 1959 and a Masters in Education Degree in 1961.
Coach Scanlan became the first head football coach at Washington High School in 1965. He is the first only coach to win a State Championship in any team sport at Washington High School. He coached the Blue Jays for 22 years winning 9 Conference Championships, 3 Distric Championships, 2 second place state finishes and the 1973 Class 3A State Championship. His team compiled a 151-48-2 record.
During his 35 years at Washington High School, he taught industrial arts, physical education and driver's education. He served as athletic director for 20 years and assistant principal for 12 years. In additon to football, he was track head coach from 1963-1974, winning 9 Conference and 3 District Championships. He also coached cross country and freshman/JV basketball at Washington High School.
Jim has been a member and leader of numerous state and nation organizations. His many honors have included the Gridiron Booster Club Oustanding Alumnus Award at Northeast MO State University - 1970, Sporting News Coach of the Year - 1978, MO Athletic Director of the Year - 1987, MO High School Footlball Coaches Hall of Fame - 1992, MIAAA State Award of Merit - 1992, St. Louis is Metro Football Coaches Hall of Fame - 1993, MSHSAA Distinguished Service Award - 1996, Truman State Athletic Hall of Fame - 1999, Gerald Linneman Lifetime Achievement Award - 2000 and the Irvin A. Keller Distinguished Service Award, MSHSAA - 2002.
Jim and Bonnie (Westermeyer) Scanlan have been married for 41 years and have three daughters, Julie, Jayne, and Janel.
